What Is a Sprite?

My own sprite image:

A sprite is a mythological creature, often associated with faeries. In my own mind, however, shaped by the images of the sprite in the game, I picture a sprite being not tall and fluttery, but rather, short with long hair, hopping merrily about.

I've encountered two descriptions that I feel accurately define sprites:
  • "...usually diminutive in stature. This group encompasses brownies, dryads, atomies, sylphs and pixies, as well as sprites themselves. They are known to be extremely agile as well as friendly and typically good-looking, but due to their generally small size they are not very strong or sturdy. They have a reputation, deserved or not, for being pranksters, and tend to be a bit flighty at times."
  • "Sprites are a small race of faerie creatures who have made a home in this world. Don't misjudge them by their seemingly weak appearance; they have the potential to master astonishing magical power and most dexterous of manual skill. Sprites are a magical race, not to be underestimated."

How I Became a Sprite

I adopted the persona of a "sprite" after having played the SNES game "The Secret of Mana" with my sister. Within the game, our adventuring party acquired a sprite and we were prompted to name her. I insisted on "Ryner". When I subsequently began logging onto talkers, I chose Ryner as my alias, and along with it, the "sprite" image.
