Roadtrip to Sioux Falls
May 27-28, 2006

Saturday morning we woke up with a hankering to take a roadtrip. After some examination of a map we decided our destination would be Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and then we hit the road!

We stopped in the city of New Ulm on the way both to get a tour and do a beer tasting at the Schell Brewery and to have some lunch. In the afternoon we hiked in Camden State Park, which was suffering from a severe caterpillar invasion. We pulled into Sioux Falls in the evening, just in time for dinner. We spent all day Sunday geocaching around Sioux Falls before hitting the road home again.

05-27-06: The forest tent caterpillar invasion at Camden State Park.

05-27-06: These little guys were all over the ground. At first, it was kind of cute, until we realized the extent of the invasion.

05-27-06: The caterpillars were not only all over the ground, but in the trees as well.

05-27-06: A view of the Redwood River in Camden State Park.

05-27-06: A sound that initially sounded like large drops of water falling to the forest floor turned out to be caterpillars, both dropping randomly from the trees and lowering themselves on silk threads, which were really disgusting to walk into!

05-27-06: Here is the type of forest tent that the caterpillars build. A single tree can have dozens of these tents in it.

05-27-06: Another caterpillar forest tent in a tree.

05-27-06: With caterpillars constantly dropping from the sky, we couldn't wait for this hike to be over. Finally, we found the Hiking Club password sign. (No, we're not telling what the password is!)

05-27-06: Our shadows on the ground in a caterpillar-free zone.

05-28-06: Jonas at Falls Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

05-28-06: A view of the falls at Falls Park.

05-28-06: Another view of the falls. They were very nice!

05-28-06: Jonas looking at the falls.

05-28-06: Here we are at the falls!

05-28-06: A view of another part of the falls.

05-28-06: A picture of the Sioux Falls State Penitentiary. We only took this picture because we were looking for a geocache nearby and didn't want to arouse suspicion. Taking pictures just says, "I'm an innocent tourist!"

05-28-06: Jonas posing nonchalantly outside the penitentiary after finding the cache.

05-28-06: We spotted a Muffler Man!
