Trip to Sweden (I)
June 3-19, 2005

Part I
Part II
Part III
Part IV
Our visit to Sweden this year was rather unexpected. Sadly, Jonas' grandmother passed away, so we decided to fly over to attend her funeral. Because we hadn't planned for it, we had to make the trip somewhat frugal. We stayed for just over two weeks, spending one week with Jonas' family and another week traveling around the countryside.

We incorporated geocaching into our trip whenever we could, and in addition to Sweden we found at least one cache in both Norway and Denmark. We also hid 5 geocaches of our own in and around Jonas' hometown of Hallsberg.

06-03-05: Jonas sitting outside O'Hare by the flagpoles, a place of special significance for us as we sat and ate a lunch there when we first met in 1996.

06-03-05: Julia sitting by the flagpoles.

06-03-05: Jonas inside O'Hare as we're waiting for our flight.

06-03-05: Jonas catching some Zs during the 8-hour+ flight to Stockholm.

06-03-05: The screen hanging above shows the flight's progress. In this picture we are near Ungava Bay, which is near the northeastern tip of Quebec, just before it becomes Labrador.

06-04-05: When we arrived in Stockholm, it was pouring of course. Typical Swedish summer weather!

06-04-05: Everyone waiting in line at customs.

06-04-05: Here Jonas demonstrates how Stockholm-Arlanda Airport is built to make you feel warm and fuzzy.

06-04-05: Now we're on the bus from the airport to downtown Stockholm. It's about a half hour ride, and of course it's still raining!

06-04-05: While we were riding the bus, Jonas called his mother to let her know we'd arrived in Sweden safe and sound. Awwww.

06-04-05: We wandered around Stockholm a bit before taking the train to Hallsberg. In this picture, everything was set up for a Smaka på Stockholm (Taste of Stockholm) festival, which appears to have been rained out.

06-04-05: Nope, nobody at the festival at all. Too bad, we were hungry.

06-04-05: We took the train from Stockholm to Hallsberg, where Jonas' father Christer and sister Karin met us at the station.

06-05-05: While in Hallsberg we stayed in Karin's apartment. The first night we woke up about 2:00am and couldn't get back to sleep. This picture shows how light it is outside at midsummer, even in the middle of the night.

06-05-05: Julia and Karin in Karin's apartment.

06-05-05: Karin in her very nicely furnished apartment.

06-05-05: As promised, we went to Jonas' parents home for breakfast. The dark red paint with white trim is a traditional Swedish theme.

06-05-05: Jonas' mother Majbritt in her kitchen.

06-05-05: Majbritt and Julia in the Sjöberg kitchen.

06-05-05: After breakfast we all piled into the car for a weekend in Göteborg on the west coast. On the way we stopped to find a few geocaches. In this picture, we're about to find one in the town of Laxå. (GCBC20)

06-05-05: Julia and Karin on the way to find another geocache in Mariestad.

06-05-05: Eureka! (GCB499)

06-05-05: We stopped for lunch at this roadside restaurant advertising "Candy & Homemade Food."

06-05-05: Majbritt checking into our hotel in Göteborg.

06-05-05: Christer and Karin with the proprietess of Hotell Aveny Turist. We highly recommend this hotel in the dark of winter, but less in summer due to lack of window shades.

06-05-05: Julia in our hotel room.

06-05-05: Karin demonstrates how the bureau turns into a bed. It's magic!

06-05-05: After checking out our hotel rooms we visited Liseberg, the largest amusement park in Scandinavia.

06-05-05: Julia, Christer and Karin waiting in line for a roller coaster.

06-05-05: Julia is caught napping during the 3D movie.

06-05-05: Jonas on the swings.

06-05-05: Majbritt on the swings.

06-05-05: Christer, Majbritt, Karin and Jonas on the spinning tower ride.

06-05-05: Majbritt looking happy on the escalator.

06-06-05: Karin, Jonas, Christer and Majbritt outside Hotell Aveny Turist.

06-06-05: The first thing we did this day is visit the Universeum, a new attraction in Göteborg. It is a cross between a zoo, an aquarium and a science museum. This is the funicular railway leading to the top.

06-06-05: Christer and Karin examining some items in the gift shop..

06-06-05: Julia and our rainforest tour guide.

06-06-05: Christer, Karin and Julia hoping to touch a ray swimming around in the tank.

06-06-05: A sawfish swimming above us.

06-06-05: Majbritt, Christer, Karin and Julia in the Universeum.

06-06-05: Majbritt, Julia, Jonas and Christer on the balcony of the picnic area on top.

06-06-05: Karin, Jonas and Julia inside The Sweat Box. The idea was that after only 5 minutes the heat generated by our 3 bodies would reach unbearable levels. Unfortunately, we didn't notice any change, so maybe it wasn't functioning. Boo.

06-06-05: Christer, Karin, Majbritt and Julia outside Restaurang Söder where we had a nice lunch.

06-06-05: Christer, Karin, Majbritt and Julia strolling down the streets of Göteborg.

06-06-05: Back in our hotel, we saw a parade for Sweden's National Day, which is celebrated every June 6, going down the street.

06-06-05: Another shot of the parade going by.

06-06-05: There's a lot going on in this picture: Pedestrians, traffic, the streetcar is going by, and students in their "graduation-mobile" are riding in the yellow-topped vehicle, shouting, singing and generally celebrating.

06-06-05: In the afternoon we went geocaching around Göteborg. This picture is the view of the harbor from Hisingen.
